The Illinois Vehicle Code was not designed with cyclists in mind. Despite that fact, we are required to follow the rules of the road as designed for motor vehicles. People who aren't experienced urban cyclists don't understand what we go through every day.
Crashes involving cyclists are almost never cut and dry. That's one of the reasons I practice this type of law. Cyclists in Chicago need someone advocating on their behalf who appreciates the reality of cycling in Chicago. Having been hit by cars three times myself, I understand that accidents do not always happen under clearly definable circumstances, and I understand that people involved with, investigating or witnessing accidents often times allow stereotypes to bias their perceptions or actions.
I offer a unique perspective because of my experience. Bicyclists are as diverse as a population can be. I have first-hand experience of the prejudices and biases waged against cyclists in Chicago. I understand the dangers we face every time we take to the road because I am an experienced racer and urban utilitarian cyclist. I have been the victim of stereotypes, inattention, road rage, and violence because of nothing more than my choice of conveyance. That is why I am in the business of advocating for cyclists and pedestrians, and that is why I love my job.
