Doorings... 625 ILCS 5/11-1407

Under Illinois law it is illegal to open your door into traffic:

(625 ILCS 5/11‑1407) (from Ch. 95 1/2, par. 11‑1407)
Sec. 11‑1407. Opening and closing vehicle doors. No person shall open the door of a vehicle on the side available to moving traffic unless and until it is reasonably safe to do so, and can be done without interfering with the movement of other traffic, nor shall any person leave a door open on the side of a vehicle available to moving traffic for a period of time longer than necessary to load or unload passengers.
(Source: P.A. 79‑1069.)

The new Chicago Bicycle Safety Ordinance also prohibits opening a car door into the path of a cyclist.

A person operating a motor vehicle must look to be sure it is safe before opening her/his door on the side available to moving traffic. I am constantly amazed by how often people fail to do this. I have personally been doored twice, and quickly learned of the hazards associated with the doors of parked cars.

If you have been doored, or if you crashed avoiding an open door you should treat the incident as any other accident. Get proper medical treatment, call the police, get witness information and call a lawyer before speaking to the insurance.
